Bajagua Sewer Deal Cleared by Cheney
The San Diego Union-Tribune reports that Vice President Dick Cheney appears to have played a major role in securing approval for the sole source contract awarded to Bajagua Project LLC.
The newspaper reports that both the Department of Justice and the U.S. International Boundary and Water Commission (part of the State Department) had opposed the deal.
A report by the Project on Government Oversight says that the objections were reversed following a meeting at Vice President Dick Cheney’s office. The Union-Tribune says that Bajagua investors and principals have contributed $10,000 to the Bush-Cheney campaign.
The story mentions the role of Brian Bilbray (Republican) and Bob Filner (Democrat) in advancing the Bajagua project.
The story is online here.

Leave it to the SDU to only “mention” Bilbray when they know full well that this is one of Bilbray’s lobbying clients! Suppose their endorsement of Mr. Bilbray for the special election shaded the news coverage just a bit??

Bajagua has been smelling up the joint longer than the Airport Commission, even. The Sierra Club went through the thing back in the early nineties, and it stank then, too, and conflict of interest was the theme throughout the deal.
I hate to take down Filner because i really like his progressive views, but his corrupted attitude about this and the airport is starting to get to me.

The report that got released by pogo.org is the most in-depth public analysis of this project so far — all backed up with about 100 pages of references and source documents. Very complete. Given the “scandal” that some Congressmembers are experiencing with only a few thousand dollars of campaign contributions and their earmarks, it’s still amazing to me that this hasn’t been picked up (yet) by the national press.

One hundred pages and not one illegality that was proven. Its not in the national news because there is nothing there. Contributions, last time I checked, are not illegal. Saldana and Vargas are really desperate to try and make this an issue……

Vargas wants to make this a big issue to deflect the spotlight on him for being so egregiously in the pockets of the insurance industry.
